MF Global was a major global broker-dealer specialising in exchange-traded derivatives, futures, and foreign exchange, with its Hong Kong operations providing dealing and advisory services across securities, futures, and leveraged FX. The firm collapsed in October 2011 in one of the largest bankruptcy filings in U.S. history, following revelations that client funds had been misused to cover proprietary trading losses in European sovereign debt. Its Hong Kong entity subsequently ceased operations, resulting in zero active licensed persons. MF Global's downfall became a landmark case in financial regulation regarding the segregation of client funds.
